- Pocket Pool Series | Emma Lamb Fine Art 2
This series of work was based on the beautiful and fleeting rock pools and pocket pools of the South West coast and forests. Made with collagraph printing and collage, the works were created with intricate textures and forms using foraged materials from the coast and forest. Pocket Pool Series This series of work was based on the wonder and beauty found when you gaze into a leaf covered pocket pool in the forest or look closely at all the life and beautiful tapestry of colours in a coastal rock pool. These earlier works were my first move away from the square canvas on a journey of creating more organic shapes replicating the destination where the inspiration was found The piece have a 3D element to their presentation and tactile quality which draws the viewer in. Working with Collagraph printing and collage, I created intricate textures and forms in my work using foraged materials from the coast and forest. Seaweeds and plants washed up on shore or on the forest floor in Autumn and Winter and a variety of found, plastics have also been recycled, melted down and re-used in my plates to create the effect of ripples and plant life in the water. The plates were then printed onto paper with collaged papers behind the print; A Japanese technique known as Chine Colle. - Tidal Trace Series | Emma Lamb Fine Art 2
This latest series of work explores the fragility of our forests and temperate rain forests in the UK. The collagraph Prints are built on different levels with raw pigments, handmade paper, experimental cyanotype, and collage papers. I am currently on a journey to find non-toxic materials, Looking at the environmental impact we are having on our forests has made my intention to move towards a more sustainable way of working more important than ever before. Tidal Trace Series The coast has a very special place in my heart, I regularly visit my local beaches cold water swimming, beach combing and foraging. I spent many holidays as child looking into the glassy waters of rockpools, waiting in anticipation for tiny creatures to emerge from under the canopy of beautifully coloured seaweed and rocks. I am fascinated by the complex nature of these precious little ecosystems and the resilience of the species that call these tidal pools home. Despite their resilience, our rockpools and coast are under threat from rising sea levels and warming waters. Rockpools are sensitive to temperature changes and the acidity of warmer waters can kill shell life, which leaves me with a question, how much change can they take and will they survive it? This series of work represents and symbolises the fragile state of our oceans and a call for us all to think about the delicate balance we currently face, whilst admiring the oceans beauty and wonder. For this series I have been foraging along the coast, finding dead Seaweeds and plants washed up on shore along with a variety of litter and plastics etc. I have crafted my findings into create plates, which I have then printed onto handmade recycled paper These 3D layered collage forms are built on different levels replicating the depth of our beautiful rockpools. The tactile quality of raw pigments, delicate handmade paper, experimental cyanotype, foraged dead plants, collage papers and paper casting are precariously placed into fragile organic forms. These delicate works are an imprint and trace of place, where the past and present interplay; allowing us room to contemplate the future fragile state of our planet and the delicate balance and ever-changing nature of our coast and rockpools. - Fragmented Forest Series | Emma Lamb Fine Art 2
Fragmented Forest Series This series of work is representing the fragile state our forests and endangered temperate rainforests in Britain. Temperate Rainforests in particular once covered up to 20% of the country. Now they are only found in small fragmented pockets. My local forests and temperate rainforests on Dartmoor have been my source of inspiration where I have spent hours photographing and exploring these fragile, beautiful and truly unique little habitats looking at the tiny ecosystems within the forest. The organic shapes in my pieces resemble pocket pools, rocks or lichen (like lung wort, often known as the lungs of the forest). The works' colours, textures and forms are all reminiscent of the forest where foraged pigments, plants and materials are found near the site, with care taken to only take dead or fallen materials in very small numbers leaving the habitat undisturbed. The 3D collagraph forms are built on different levels with the tactile quality of raw pigments, delicate handmade paper, experimental cyanotype, foraged dead plants and collage papers precariously placed into fragile organic forms. These delicate works are an imprint and trace of place, where the past and present interplay; allowing us room to contemplate the future fragile state of our planet and the delicate balance of life itself. I am on a continuous journey to find non-toxic materials, using foraged and handmade pigments and papers where possible. - About | Emma Lamb Fine Art 2
Artist's Statement I am fascinated by the primal instinct we have to be close to nature; the joy and peace we feel in its presence, both physically and mentally. I see my work as an emotional response to this instinct; an intimate landscape that mimics and amplifies nature, transporting the viewer to a place of wonder and beauty evoking emotion and intrigue. Entwined within my pieces is an awareness of the fragile state of our planet and the delicate balance of life itself. The work is built on different levels, where the tactile quality of raw pigments, delicate handmade paper, foraged dead plants and collage papers reveal an imprint and trace of place, where the past and present interplay, allowing us room to contemplate the future state of our planet and the ever increasing threat from climate change. The work's finer details, forms and textures reflect what we see when we look at our surroundings from different viewpoints, particularly up close. I am intrigued by the tiny details we see when we give ourselves the time and space from our busy lives to watch and observe the natural world. Slowing down helps us to appreciate the symbiotic relationship between life forms and the intricate tapestry of colours, textures and forms that we see when peering into a glassy rock pool or looking at a forest floor. These environments are beautiful but fleeting, ever changing and evolving, like the seasons and cycle of life itself. In recent years I have been reflecting on my own impact on our planet as an artist; looking at the harmful toxins and plastics so many art materials contain. I am on a journey to find non-toxic materials, using foraged and hand made pigments and papers where possible. Now my work is not only inspired by nature, but nature has become part if the work itself. A trace of place now being present in the work. The creative process starts with me immersing myself in the wilderness; cold water swimming, wild camping and foraging, whilst admiring the power and beauty of the outdoors. This is my 'happy place’. On my travels I gather nuggets of inspiration for my work in the form of photographs, plants, as well as earth and rocks to be made into pigments for paint. My work comes to life in my studio, where I embrace the process of sketching, ripping, printing and manipulating surfaces. Exploration and play are at the heart of my approach. I enjoy pushing the boundaries of the mediums I work with, experimenting with a wide variety of unusual techniques and processes. The physical act of making paints, collage papers and my own paper excite me, giving my work authenticity and history. My whole process is a dance between control and unpredictability, intuition and analysis; mirroring our relationship with nature and what it is to be human.
